Proteoglycan F
Food with Functional Claims
Proteoglycan has been attracting attention and gaining recognition as a biogenic component following collagen and hyaluronic acid. Proteoglycans are already used in many products and have secured a certain position as a beauty food material. In July 2020, proteoglycan was newly accepted for “Food with Functional Claims” in the beauty care field, and sales are expected to increase. In this report, we will take a closer look at the potential of proteoglycans and verify their further possibilities in the beauty care field.

Dermal componet “Proteoglycan”
Proteoglycans are glycoproteins formed by the binding of core proteins to glycosaminoglycan chains such as chondroitin sulfate and keratin sulfate. They are one of the main components of the dermis and are widely distributed in human skin and cartilage. Glycosaminoglycan chains have sponge-like water-holding capacity, viscosity and elasticity.
As a result of various studies to confirm the efficacy of proteoglycans extracted from salmon nasal cartilage on skin, in 2020, Astrium, a group company of Ichimaru, applied for a final product containing proteoglycan F as a food with a functional claim. The application was accepted as a product with the functionality of “Improvement of skin elasticity.

The process of extracting proteoglycans was very difficult and even cost 1 g=. 300,000 USD the early days. Later, through industry-government-academia research, a technology was established to extract large amounts of highly pure proteoglycans from salmon nasal cartilage, and its high effectiveness was confirmed.

Improvement of sagging
The subjects were 19 healthy adult males and females in their 20s to 50s. They took one capsule of either 5 mg of salmon nasal cartilage-derived proteoglycan (equivalent to 25 mg of Proteoglycan F) (mean age 39.1 years) or placebo (mean age 39.6 years) per day between meals for 2 weeks. A double-blind, parallel-group comparison study was conducted. (The same for the following three studies.)
The results showed that intake of salmon nasal cartilage-derived proteoglycans improved sagging skin.
A lot of researches have already been conducted on proteoglycans in the beauty field, and it's usefulness has already been established by proof. Here we introduce some of them.
Food with Functional Claims「柔肌YAWAHADA」
A beauty supplement manufactured by ASTRIM, a group company of Ichimaru Pharcos, utilizing Proteoglycan F. The product has received a health claim for “Maintaining skin elasticity,” and is expected to be in high demand, especially from senior citizens. The recommended daily intake of this product is 3 capsules.

In part, the above experimental results, demonstrate the effectiveness of salmon nasal cartilage-derived proteoglycans in the beauty field. Its potential will be expanded by further studies.
Ichimaru Pharcos, a pioneer of proteoglycans
As the experimental data shows, Proteoglycan F is very effective with very small amounts, and since it is also available in liquid form, it is highly applicable to food products.
ASTRIM, a group company of Ichimaru Pharcos, manufactures YAWAHADA, a beauty and health food product using Proteoglycan F, and has applied for “Maintaining skin elasticity. In addition, OEM production is possible using the same formula.
Ichimaru Pharcos, as a pioneer of proteoglycans, has a sales track record of more than 10 years, and will continue to promote the expansion of recognition and market size. Proteoglycans are already well known as a joint-related material, and with the recent approval of their beauty efficacy, further expansion of the sales market can be expected.
As a high potential beauty material, we will continue to research new effects.
Proteoglycans are the third beauty ingredient after collagen and hyaluronic acid, and their market size continues to grow.
It has been confirmed through experiments that proteoglycans not only promote the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid, but also activate skin cells. There is also data from clinical trials showing that taking 5 mg of proteoglycan can improve skin elasticity, sagging, and wrinkles.
Compared to other ingredients, it is effective in small doses and has little affect on the taste or flavor of food, so it is used in a wide variety of beauty foods.
Although the mechanism of its efficacy has not yet been explained, there is no doubt about its potential as a beauty ingredient, and we will continue to research its unexplained efficacy.
